Used by african tribal men for their circumcision ceremony. The Xhosa circumcision ceremony is an ancient African tradition through which a boy must pass to attain manhood. The intensely secret ceremony takes place in isolation where the boys are subjected to extreme physical tests . They paint their bodies with a white clay and wear only these white blankets which are believed to ward off evil spirits. Over a few months, they are taught tribal traditions and survival, culminating with the final circumcision ritual , performed with daggers and no anaesthetic. The blankets are typically burned at the end of the ritual.
